The uterus is the source of menstruation and, with the ovaries, is also an organ that is perceived as a preserver of youth and attractiveness. Small wonder, then, that hysterectomy is at least potentially surgery with a negative effect on women’s psyche and their sense of bodily integrity, surgery that may be followed by emotional upheavals. While the loss of reproductive abilities should perhaps not be viewed as a loss of femininity, at the same time, this is a perfectly reasonable way to react to such surgery. Although the uterus may have been diseased and the cause of much trouble, after hysterectomy its loss may understandably be mourned. The absence of menstruation is particularly disturbing to some women, many of whom wish to know about the effects of retaining in the body all the so-called bad blood that used to seep out with menstruation.

Unless carefully counseled, many women feel that they are sexually less attractive, incomplete, or somehow diminished by hysterectomy. And there is nothing unexpected or wrong with such feelings. An unsympathetic husband (or gynecologist, or hospital personnel) can undermine hours of reassurance. Fear of pain and the loss of control and depersonalization of a bad hospital experience also tend to make hysterectomy a potentially troubling experience.
