A Missouri woman underwent a high risk surgery after it was discovered that migrated Mirena IUD had punctured her uterine wall. Another Mirena lawsuit filed by an Ohio woman highlights how the contraceptive embedded in the uterus required her to undergo hysterectomy, stomach tissue excision, and appendectomy.
Most Reported Mirena Side Effects
- Mirena IUD Migration: Displaced IUD causes multiple injuries and uterus damage. A number of women have suffered from permanent uterus damage caused by Mirena migration. A 20-year-old had to undergo uterus removal surgery following uterine perforation caused by the IUD. In another case, doctors had to open rib cages of a user to remove the Mirena IUD from her body.
- Pelvic Inflammatory Diseases: Mirena birth control side effects lead to infection, inflammation, and other pelvic complications. Pelvic injuries are more severe in cases of Mirena migration.
- Vaginal Problems: Vaginitis, dysmenorrheal, intercourse pain, vaginal bleeding, etc. are commonly visible in women using Mirena contraceptive for a long time.
- Ovarian Cysts: Levonorgestrel synthetic hormone in the IUD often causes formation of painful cysts in the ovary. Almost 13 percent of Mirena birth control device users face this risk.
- Post-Use Pregnancy Problems: Ectopic pregnancy and post-use miscarriages are among the most reviewed side effects of Mirena contraceptive. The IUD has failed to stop fertilization of the egg outside the ovary in many cases, while surgeries to remove the displaced device during pregnancy involve life-threatening risks.
- Menstrual Disorder: Irregular bleeding, spotting, shorter menstrual cycles, and abdominal cramps are felt within weeks of using the contraceptive.
- Other Side Effects: Secondary or removal surgeries necessitated by device migration, hypertension and heart strokes, genitourinary infections, depression, angioedema, back pain, etc.
Is Mirena Just Another IUD Gone Wary
The rising number of Mirena lawsuits reminds the ill-fated consumers of their suffering due to the side effects of Dalkon Shield IUD. Over 300,000 lawsuits were filed against the manufacturer A. H. Robins that resulted in over $3 billion compensation. In 2009, the FDA restricted Bayer from promoting Mirena as the safest birth control option and included the IUD marketing campaign under its “Bad Ad Program.”
Doctors are wary of prescribing Mirena IUD to woman, especially those yet to be pregnant, fearing the damage it can cause to the uterus.
