Lipitor Ups Diabetes Risk, Evidence Suggests
Pfizer’s cholesterol-lowering medication Lipitor raises up the risk of diabetes in female patients on a high-dose therapy. And those already having the conventional diabetes factors face a much higher threat of developing type 2 diabetes. A report in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology suggests an evidence of close association between diabetes and Lipitor, a statin that helped in raising the revenue to $150 billion for the manufacturer in the last 20 years.
The study, deriving its samples of three comprehensive clinical trials, suggests a close link between type 2 diabetes and cholesterol drug Lipitor. The clinical trials focused on identifying comparative variation in the cardiovascular risk in patients using Lipitor other statins and placebo pills. Researchers experimented with high-dose Lipitor, and determined the key ingredient atorvastatin at 80 mg.
The threat of patients developing type 2 diabetes is intensified when traditional diabetes risk in them is already present, the study reports. Those without diabetes history are at a slightly heightened risk. However, people with elevated triglycerides, hypertension, blood sugar, excessive weight, and obesity – predictable factors creating the danger of diabetes – are at a greater risk of being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes when treated with high-dose Lipitor therapy.
Led by researchers from the University of California, the study discovered a definite link between Lipitor and type 2 diabetes. When used over five years, the type 2 diabetes risk increases by 10 percent. But when other factors, such as weight, smoking, age, and hypertension, are considered, the risk could rise by 37 percent.
Lipitor Diabetes Risk Studies
A number of other studies have also expressed apprehension over cholesterol-lowering statin causing diabetes in users. Medical professionals have also called for diet changes and exercises as the first line of defense against cholesterol prior to taking Lipitor other statins.
In January 2014, the Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism journal published a report that was more critical of Lipitor diabetes side effects. Researchers discovered that at least one in four patients taking statins for reducing cholesterol faces a higher risk of ending up with diabetes. While establishing a definite connection between diabetes and Lipitor, the report attributed the cause to a “dose-response relationship.”
In July 2013, a European research study claimed that Lipitor and similar statins were responsible for at least 9 percent rise in diabetes threat. Published in Circulation: Cardiovascular Quality and Outcomes, a medical weekly, the study, a meta-analysis of 135 reports, also discovered high incidence of Lipitor discontinuation due to side effects.
The most vocal report highlighting Lipitor diabetes risk was published in the Archives of Internal Medicine in 2012. It warned of 50 percent enhanced threat of type 2 diabetes in elder women treated with the cholesterol drug.
Research studies as well as large-scale side effect complaints forced the FDA to mandate label changes for Lipitor, Zocor, and other cholesterol drugs in February 2012. The new changes include warning of diabetes risk, cognitive disabilities, and muscle disorders caused by these drugs.
Lipitor Diabetes Lawsuit
