Mirena Migration Lawsuit: Plaintiffs Claim Serious Health Hazards
Connecticut resident Jessica opted for Mirena IUD contraceptive in 2009 following its promotion by manufacturer Bayer as a safe and secure birth control option for five years. However, the ill-fated user experienced months of severe abdominal pain and other pelvic problems in 2011 that forced her to consult doctors. Medical tests revealed that the Mirena IUD moved away from its place and damaged her internal organs that put her at the permanent risk of placenta accrete. She had to undergo IUD removal surgery. In July 2013, Jessica filed a Mirena lawsuit seeking $150,000 compensation for her suffering and medical treatment cost.
Mirena Migration Injuries
At least 6,000 complaints highlighting serious Mirena migration complications, including damage to uterus, stomach, pelvic organs, and additional need for high-risk surgeries, were reported to the FDA in the last four years. More than 4,700 had severe uterus perforations leading to end of their ability of conceive.
The most reported Mirena migration injuries include
- Uterus perforation
- Puncturing of the fallopian tube
- Mirena embedding with the organs necessitating surgical separation
- Pelvic tissue excision
- Stomach tissue excision when Mirena embed with the stomach

Mirena Migration Warning
The prescription drug injury watchdog DrugRisk published a research report a few weeks ago indicating over 17 percent rise in Mirena migration injury claims. According to its estimates, the total number of injuries is many times more than 6,000 reports received on the MedWatch system as many of the incidents go unreported over the years.
The risk of Mirena migration and associated injuries are also high on the radar of the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons. The top medical association guiding laparoscopy and endoscopy experts has already issued an advisory informing its members of the high risk of permanent damage the IUD can cause to uterus, fallopian tube, and other reproductive organs.
In February 2013, a study published in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology highlighted case studies where removal surgeries following Mirena migration left hundreds of women with life-long complications. It warned of higher risk for pregnant women forced to go for removal surgery, both attributed to Mirena displacement.
Mirena Migration Lawsuit
More than 200 Mirena lawsuits have been filed this year, claiming that the manufacturer did not disclose the potential risk of Mirena migration and side effects and instead, promoted the IUD as a safe contraceptive. One of the Mirena lawsuits filed in a San Francisco court in July representing 29 women highlights serious injuries the IUD inflicted on the plaintiffs. According to the lawsuit, each of the complainants underwent at least one surgery required by the displacement of the T-shaped intrauterine device. The contraceptive device migration resulted in perforation of uterus and damage to other organs. Many of the plaintiffs underwent the uterus removal surgery while a number of them had ovarian cysts. A few got pregnant despite having the device implanted.
Similar IUD product liability lawsuits in the past against A. H. Robins and G. D. Searle led to over $4 billion in compensatory payments. A Minneapolis woman, one among over 1,000 Copper-7 IUD litigants against G. D. Searle, received a whopping $8 in damages. A. H. Robins agreed to pay $3 billion in 1985 to settle more than 300,000 Dalkon Shield IUD lawsuits filed against it.
