Our team of attorneys are now investigating claims and prepared to file Mirena lawsuitsinvolving the intrauterine contraceptive device Mirena®. Manufactured by Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals, Inc., Mirena is an IUD device [intrauterine device] that must be inserted by a trained health care provider and is intended to provide contraceptive protection for up to five years. Some women have experienced serious adverse side-effects and potentially life-threatening complications following the implantation of theMirena device, including perforation of or imbedment in the uterus.
Perforation of the Uterus
Mirena is alleged to have many side effects. Mirena is an interuterine contraceptive device {IUD}. As a Mirena attorney that wants to provide information to women or their loved ones about making a Mirena claim or to discuss a Mirena lawsuit, Mirena has its own side effects. One such side effect is perforation of the uterus.
One of the causes of uterine perforation is the use of IUDs such as Mirena. Perforation of the uterus is a serious complication and is often difficult to detect. About 2 in 1000 women who use the Mirena device and other IUDs have reported cases of uterine perforation. A uterine perforation is serious complication that can occur as a result of any type of intra uterine procedure or implantation. It is also referred to as perforation of the uterus.
Improper insertion can be harmful, since it can result in partial or total perforation of the uterine wall. If the perforation occurs at the time of the insertion, it may be silent and you will not be aware of the perforation. However in some cases, it can cause significant pelvic pain. Perforations which occur subsequently are some times asymptomatic or in some cases cause non-specific lower abdominal pain. One of the indications of a uterine perforation from a Mirena device is that the strings that are visible will be missing. If you are using a Mirena device and the strings are missing, you should immediately consult a doctor. You will be asked to undergo an ultrasound.
Mirena Complications
If a uterine perforation occurs, the Mirena device can injure or perforate other organs. If your uterus has been perforated by the Mirena device, you must have the device removed. If during the insertion you feel any sharp pain, request your doctor to stop the procedure. Wait for a week before you attempt another insertion. When you are expelling the Mirena device, it can perforate the cervix. Women whose uterus has been perforated can develop other complication such as myometrial thinning, post menopausal endometrial atrophy, uterine malpoistion, distortion of uterine anatomy and cervical stenosis.
Perforation of Other Organs
Sometime a uterine perforation can also result in the perforation of the urinary bladder. If your urinary bladder is perforation, it can result in peritonitis. It’s not just the urinary bladder. In extreme cases, your intestines can be perforated. If you intestine is perforated, a portion of it may have to be surgically removed.
