Our team of attorneys are now investigating claims and prepared to file Mirena lawsuitsinvolving the intrauterine contraceptive device Mirena®. Manufactured by Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals, Inc., Mirena is an IUD device [intrauterine device] that must be inserted by a trained health care provider and is intended to provide contraceptive protection for up to five years. Some women have experienced serious adverse side-effects and potentially life-threatening complications following the implantation of theMirena device, including perforation of or imbedment in the uterus.
Perforation of the Cervix
Mirena is alleged to have many side effects. Mirena is an interuterine contraceptive device {IUD}. As a Mirena attorney that wants to provide information to women or their loved ones about making a Mirena claim or to discuss a Mirena lawsuit, Mirena has its own side effects. One such side effect is perforation of the cervix.
The Mirena Device is an interuterine device used as a contraceptive by many women. Although its success rate is very high, it has its own adverse effects. One such adverse effect is the perforation of the uterus. Perforation of the uterus can lead to further complications such as peritonitis and sepsis.
Foreign Object Via Mirena
Whenever a foreign object is inserted into the uterus, there is a risk of a life threatening perforation of the uterine wall. Perforation can cause hemorrhaging and can lead to peritonitis if the object has also punctured the bowel and released fecal material into the body cavity. Such complications can sometimes be fatal and cause the patient to suffer through particularly painful and long death. A perforation of the uterus can occur at the time of insertion of the Mirena device.
Peritonitis
Peritonitis is a medical emergency that requires immediate attention. It is an inflammation of the lining of the abdominal cavity. Peritonitis can be very painful because of the perforation. If the Mirena device perforates another organ, the contents of that organ can spill into the peritoneal cavity (space in the abdomen between the organs). It is frequently so severe and aggravated by any body movement that the patient cannot even change position from side to side. The abdomen is rigid to the touch and no bowel sounds are heard through a stethoscope. Often, the physician’s hand can feel free air over the liver, indicating the escape of air from an internal organ. It requires emergency care and hospitalization. The perforated organ is located and surgery performed to drain the peritoneal cavity, rid it of infection, and close the perforation.
Sepsis
Sepsis is the result of a bacterial infection of the blood stream that causes very low blood pressure and shock. Sepsis represents a failure of the protective mechanisms of the body. The more widespread the infection the more dangerous it is. The bacteria and their toxins invade the blood stream and circulate throughout the body. Septic shock occurs when the body is so overwhelmed by infect that there is a general circulatory collapse.
