Testosterone Therapy Leads to Fatal Cardiovascular Risks, Claims Research Study
In November 2013, the Journal of the American Medical Association reported findings that linked testosterone therapy side effects to death and serious heart problems. Researchers from Denver-based VA Eastern Colorado Health Care discovered hundreds of instances where men had suffered from death, stroke, and heart attacks following administration of testosterone therapy. The study analyzed details of 1,223 men treated with the hormone enhancement medications and reported that 33 suffered from stroke, 23 were hospitalized, and 67 died within 18 months of having testosterone therapy.
Researchers claimed that there was at least 29 percent increase in the risk of cardiovascular problems in men treated with testosterone therapy. Supported by a team of experts from the University of Texas, they studied the medical history of 9,000 male veterans who underwent angiography between 2005 and 2011 because of blockage in coronary artery. It was found that those used testosterone supplements had 30 percent higher rate of cardiovascular adverse events resulting in death, stroke, or heart attack. The study held aggressive promotion and off-label prescription of testosterone supplements responsible for increase in the risk of side effects.
According to a 2013 Wall Street Journal report, a high risk of heart problems linked to testosterone therapy side effects forced researchers sponsored by the National Institutes of Health to call off a hormone treatment trial for older men in 2009.
Testosterone Therapy Health Risks
Testosterone hormone plays a key role in helping sexual drive, concentration, muscle strength, sperm creation, energy level, and bone health in men. However, the hormone production decreases in men after they complete 30 years. Many also suffer because of hypogonadism or reduced functioning of sex glands, which results in diminished testosterone production. To overcome such conditions, men resort to administration of testosterone supplements in the form of injection, patch, and gel. AndroGel, Testim, Fortesta, Depo-Testosterone, Bio-T-Gel, Axiron, Cypionate, Delatestryl, Androderm, Striant, Androgel, and Testopel are among the most used testosterone therapy medications.
Major health risks linked to testosterone therapy include
- Death
- Aggravation of preexisting heart, kidney, or liver disorders
- Cardiovascular disorders leading to heart attack and stroke
- Blood clots in the leg causing the potential risk of artery blockages
- Metabolic disorders resulting in diabetes and high cholesterol
- Risk of prostate cancer
- Endocrine imbalance
Mayo Clinic warns of the risk of sleep apnea, development of enlarged male breasts, prostate tumor, and skin problems among testosterone therapy side effects.
FDA Warning on Testosterone Therapy
The FDA has added black box warnings on AndroGel and Testim, two most used testosterone therapy gels, for raising the risk of secondary exposure. Issued in 2009, the warning cautioned about the potential risk of increased violent behavior, abnormal genital growth, premature sexual behavior, and accelerated bone growth in children and women when exposed to these testosterone medications used by men at home.
Earlier in 2000, the FDA cautioned against universal use of AndroGel, suggesting that the medication is only for men with hypogonadism and not for “age-associated” reduction in the testosterone level. However, there is widespread off-label promotion of these testosterone drugs notwithstanding the FDA advisory. AndroGel maker AbbVie is facing a whistleblower lawsuit for pressing for off-label promotion and use of its “low-T” products.
Testosterone medications, like AndroGel, Androderm, Axiron, Depotestosterone, Fortesta, and Testim, could increase the percentage of red blood cells in your blood. The increase in red blood cells can cause strokes, blood clots, and possibly death.
