She has been suing Pfizer for its failure to inform about serious consequences for newborns when Effexor was used by pregnant women.

                  Sheryllyn Bonds of Georgia has also made similar allegations. According to her Effexor lawsuit, she gave birth to a boy with serious deformities after using the antidepressant prescribed by a doctor during her pregnancy. The child had imperforate anus, which required him to undergo multiple surgeries after birth, and a right club foot.

                  Effexor Birth Defects

                  • Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension: A life-threatening heart defect, this leads to failure of normal blood circulation. It may lead to hypoxemia, intra-cardiac blood shunting, and heart failure in newborns.
                  • Patent Foramen Ovale: Children born to mothers prescribed Effexor during preganancy are likely to have hole in septum wall. The hole remains open allowing blood to flow between the left and right atria instead of the lungs.
                  • Fatal heart deformities, including hypoplastic left heart syndrome, ventral and atrial septal defects, hypoplastic lungs, and omphalocele.
                  • Cranial defects, such as fetal brain not fully developed or skull not covered.
                  • Developmental delays manifested in slow learning, difficulty in walking or sitting early, subdued expressions, slow brain development, and growth problems.

                  Other Side Effects

                  Pregnant women taking Effexor are at the increased risk of postpartum hemorrhage or bleeding. According to a 2010 report in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, Effexor side effects put pregnant women at the greater risk of miscarriage. The FDA has warned about the potential risk of suicidal thoughts in those treated with the antidepressant. There are also reports of withdrawal symptoms, ejaculation disorder, somnolence, constipation, abnormal vision, hypertension, gastrointestinal bleeding, seizures, and pelvic pain in a number of people treated with Effexor.

                  Effexor Side Effect Warnings

                  • In 2004, the FDA ordered the manufacturer to add a black box warning on Effexor for the risk of suicidal behavior in adolescents. In 2005, its prescription for children was prohibited.
                  • In 2006, Health Canada urged women already pregnant or trying to conceive to refrain from taking Effexor, as it could cause deformities in children born to them.

                  Dozens of Effexor birth defect lawsuits have been filed against Pfizer in the United States. Judge Cynthia M.                     Effexor: The First SNRI Antidepressant

                    Effexor was approved by the FDA in 1993 and marketed by Wyeth, which was acquired by Pfizer in 2009. The first of the serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors to be introduced in the United States, the antidepressant was among the top 15 prescribed drugs until 2011. Effexor is recommended to treat major depression, social phobia, general anxiety, and panic. Venlafaxine in Effexor-class SNRIs improves serotonin and norepinephrine – the two neurotransmitters in the brain responsible for feelings of well being – inhibits depression and anxiety.

                    Effexor’s popularity primarily rested on the consideration that SNRIs have lesser side effects compared to SSRIs. However, the recent reports highlighting life-threatening congenital birth defects in children born to mothers treated with the antidepressant show that Effexor is unsafe. The FDA has added a Black Box warning, the highest public health caution, to both SSRIs and SNRIs for inciting suicidal thoughts and behavior in young users.

                    British Medical Journal on Effexor Birth Defect

                    In August 2013, an Effexor side effect research report published in the British Medical Journal claimed high risk of postpartum hemorrhaging and birth defect associated with SNRI antidepressant. Samples survey of over 106,000 women treated with SNRI and SSRI antidepressants during their pregnancy revealed that those took Effexor face a two-fold increase in the risk of post-delivery bleeding. Babies are most likely to born with physical defects when the drug is taken during or after the third trimester of pregnancy.

                    The Journal reported a similar study in 2009 that warned of double risk of heart defects, including hypoplastic left heart syndrome and ventral and atrial septal defects, in newborns because of Effexor use by their mother during pregnancy. Most of these deformities require surgical intervention soon after the birth of children.

                    Effexor Birth Defect and Developmental Delays

                    In 2010, a group of Danish scholars claimed that mothers taking Effexor during pregnancy are more likely to give birth to babies with delayed developmental stages. Such children may have speech problem, improper brain development, and delayed abilities to sit upright and walk. A March 2010 report in the Pediatrics journal also warned of developmental delays, walking problems, and sitting disorders in children because of antidepressants used by their pregnant mothers.

                    In 2012, the American Academy of Pediatrics issued an advisory linking Effexor to potential risk of birth defects in children and miscarriage of pregnant women.

                    Effexor Linked to Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension

                    In 2006, the New England Journal of Medicine linked Effexor to life-threatening Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension, where blood flow to the lungs is obstructed. The published report claimed that the antidepressant could enhance the risk of the fatal lung condition by six fold, if the drug is taken after 20th week of pregnancy. The study prompted Health Canada to issue a public advisory asking women planning pregnancy not to take Effexor and similar SNRI drugs.
