Lipitor Diabetes Lawsuit: Plaintiff Claims Cholesterol Drug Leads to Bigger Trouble

Tennessee resident Marianna was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes four years after she was prescribed a Lipitor regimen to lower her cholesterol. Her Lipitor diabetes lawsuit, filed just a month ago, claims that she developed diabetes due to the drug side effects, which could be avoidable with other alternatives. Marianna is again back to her earlier situation and faces the same cardiovascular risk she tried to avoid by reducing bad cholesterol.

Marianna had no family history or any conventional factor supporting onset diabetes. Her doctor prescribed a Lipitor regimen in 2008 to cut down her cholesterol level and avoid any potential cardiovascular problem linked to it. She took the drug considering it a safe option with fewer side effects. In January 2012, she was surprised to found that she had developed diabetes. A number of research studies and FDA public health alert in February 2012 linking statins to diabetes risk convinced her that the disease was caused due to Lipitor side effects.

The plaintiff claims that she would not have opted for the medication had Pfizer warned consumers of the potential diabetes risk of Lipitor. Marianna now faces more health restrictions and her purpose of taking Lipitor has been defeated completely. She suffered financially and physically due to the drug and now faces an increasing number of diabetes-induced health problems in addition to the risk of heart disease.

Study Claims 22% Rise in Lipitor Diabetes Risk

Research findings published in the British Medical Journal in 2013 claimed that cholesterol drugs, including Lipitor, could result in the onset of diabetes for women. Quoting a group of Canadian researchers, the report indicated a 22 percent higher diabetes risk in Lipitor users. The findings provided a solid basis for a large number of people who seek or are planning to seek product liability against Pfizer for marketing an unsafe drug. The findings were primarily based on the study of about half a million people who used various statins to cut down bad cholesterol.

The close connection between Lipitor and type 2diabetes risk was first highlighted by British scholars from the University of Glasgow. Published in the Lancet in 2010, the study compiled findings of 13 different studies tasked with identifying statins-diabetes association.

The Archives of Internal Medicine highlighted a report in January 2012 that warned of over 50 percent higher diabetes risk in women treated with the cholesterol lowering drug. Researchers looked into the history of over 160,000 women aged between 50 and 79 years and registered with the Women’s Health Initiative.

Lipitor Diabetes Lawsuits

Pfizer included diabetes risk in Lipitor label information following an order by the FDA in February 2012. However, this was too late for hundreds of people who have already been victimized by the drug side effects. Many of the plaintiffs, who have filed Lipitor diabetes lawsuits seeking product liability, were diagnosed with the disease almost two to three years prior to the label changes. Until then there were no words from the manufacturer asking patients to at least monitor variations in their blood sugar levels following the drug use. Lipitor diabetes lawsuits claim that Pfizer’s failure to provide information to consumers about possible Lipitor diabetes side effects for years make it liable for their sufferings.

Lipitor Attorney Notes that Ingestion May Cause Type 2 Diabetes

    FREE CASE EVALUATION: 1-800-632-1404

Lawsuits currently allege that the ingestion of Lipitor, made by Pfizer, may cause Type 2 diabetes.  If you are or have taken the cholesteral medication Lipitor and have developed Type 2 diabetes, we may be able to help.

The JPML has recently denied a request to transfer and consolidate actions against Pfizer, the manufacturer of the cholesterol drug Lipitor.  The panel noted that there are already a number of cases pending in the District of South Carolina that involve common counsel and that it is not appropriate at this point in time to consolidate the cases.  Furthermore, Lipitor came onto the market in the late 1990’s and is one of the three best selling prescription drugs of all time.  The label change need occurred in 2012, yet more than a year later only a relative handful of actions have been brought actually alleging a link between ingestion of Lipitor and the development of Type 2 Diabetes.  Accordingly, “a highly individualized inquiry is necessary to determine whether any particular plaintiff developed Type 2 diabetes as a result of taking Lipitor.”  It is uncertain whether the JPML would change its mind after a number of additional cases are located and filed.

Our attorneys are currently reviewing any potential case involving someone that ingested Lipitor and have sustained a Lipitor injury and been diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes.
