PPHN is a serious birth defect.  Even after treatment, infants can be susceptible to heart failure, brain hemorrhage, seizures, kidney failure or organ damage.  Some of these birth defects can be present throughout life or even fatal.  Some infants who happen to survive PPHN nevertheless have long term breathing difficulties, seizures, developmental delays and hearing loss.

Researchers found that more than 12,700 infants born from 1997 to 2004 in the United States whose mothers were taking Wellbutrin during the pregnancy, had more than double the risk of a heart defect known as left outflow defects.

              Outflow Defect affects the blood-flow from the heart’s left chambers to the rest of the body. The most common type of heart defect cited within this study was coarctation of the aorta, which is a congenital heart defect involving a narrowing of the aorta usually requiring surgery. According to experts, the risk of this heart defect is small, effecting just 2 out of every 1,000 infants born to women who used Wellbutrin during the first trimester.
